Informed choice on glyphosate in your food supply
Glyphoste (aka Round Up) may be patented as an antibiotic, discovered as a chelator to clean industrial pipes, an endocrine disruptor (studies even showed it destroyed the testes of male rats!), and labeled as a possible human carcinogen by the World Health Organization, but Monsanto scientists have told us it's completely safe to spray on our food. And if we question that, we are fear mongering?! Make it make sense 🥴😳🤔
While you may know it's widely used as the #1 herbicide, did you know it's also used before harvest as a desiccant? What the heck does that mean anyway?
In agriculture, glyphosate (the active ingredient in Roundup) is controversially used as a pre-harvest desiccant. While technically a systemic herbicide rather than a true drying agent, farmers apply it to dry out crops like wheat, oats, and beans to force uniform ripening and accelerate the harvest schedule.Â
Applying glyphosate right before harvest leaves high concentrations of the chemical residue directly on the harvested food crop (e.g., cereals, legumes). Due to these residue limits, the use of glyphosate as a pre-harvest desiccant is forbidden in regions like the European Union.
The practice is highly scrutinized by health and environmental advocacy groups due to ongoing debates regarding potential long-term health hazards associated with dietary glyphosate exposure.
An informed choice is the best choice. I just wish we were informed when they do this to our food with clear labeling.Â
Certified organic means no glyphosate used in the growing or drying process. While we can't avoid glyphosate 100%, we can make the biggest change by avoiding it in our diet.Â
